Mtn. Caribou

Lone Wolf is known for awesome mountain caribou hunting. Many hunters are taking a caribou as a second animal on a moose or grizzly combination hunt. Mountain caribou hunting can be done on any of our  hunt dates in August, September and October, with any hunting method. In August, you can hunt Stone Sheep, Mtn. Caribou in combination with  Grizzly. Black bear, wolf and wolverine are also available on these hunts.

Caribou start heading for the mountains in early September to shed out their velvet. Bulls are spread out at this time and mostly solitary, but you will see a few bachelor groups during this hunt. Grizzly and moose are a good option during these warm fall days with trees and bushes in beautiful colors.

As September moves on, the caribou sightings are more and more frequent in the mountains. Bulls are in herds with cows, and the bulls will start to fight. These noticeably shorter days can give way to nighttime freezing. The valleys are starting to get more open as the leaves are falling off all the different willow and alders at this time.

By the end of September the weather gets cooler in the high country. The pattern turns slowly towards the look of winter with the occasional snow flurry. The rut is in full action. The big caribou bulls are grouped with the cows and are breeding. The cooler weather increases the activity of the animals.

new_11.jpg (31429 Byte)ATV hunt are for the hunter who likes to cover a lot of different country. We have a number of areas where it is practical to get around on these machines and still make the hunt enjoyable. ATVs, as your hunting ‘companion’ (as opposed to horses) allow you to hunt with ‘the turn of a key’ as early as you want. This hunt can be for the hunter who is more physically challenged, or anyone who just likes the ATVs as a part of the hunting experience. Consider that we can access the high country with our ATVs which make it easy to combine your caribou hunt with a grizzly or moose.

On a remote lake hunt we fly you into an alpine lake for a very unique hunting experience. You are alone with your guide in totally untouched wilderness. Hunting pressure does not exist and all you hear is the echo of your guide’s moose call across the lake that you quietly explore in a canoe or small boat. Any one of our numerous lakes can be home for you during this 8-day hunting adventure, where the caribou are crossing. This is a great way to harvest a bull in country that has seen virtually no one... Grizzly, moose, black bear, wolf and wolverine are available on these hunts as well.

Horseback hunts are the most popular choice of hunting in Yukon. Horses are a great way to gain access into remote country that hasn’t been hunted. You are very flexible when hunting with horses, as you can hunt the lakes, rivers and mountains. There is a certain ‘romance’ involved with horseback hunting, and this is the association to Yukon that so many hunters make. Horse back is a good way to do a combination hunt, with all the species that we can offer to hunt. Many hunters that have mtn. caribou on their list together with moose, grizzly, black bear, wolf and wolverine select this type of hunting.

Since most caribou hunts are combination hunts you have to select a caliber accordingly. Anything from .300 WM to .338 WM is acceptable. Keep in mind that there are many grizzlies in the high country, and this is the most common combination with caribou. Please see Hunt Info for a detailed list of what to bring on this hunt.
