For Prices and Dates please click here The Stone Sheep is truly one of the most sought-after trophies in North America, if not the world. It is highly respected in all hunting circles, and most important to the sheep hunters. Stone Sheep occurrence in Yukon is the most northerly distribution of this species. In our area, we hunt the Stone Sheep in the famous Pelly Mountains in the north and the equally famous Cassiar Mountain range in the south. Our sheep populations are scattered throughout vast ranges, and we still have untouched areas with new sheep populations that haven’t been hunted.
All our sheep hunts are horseback, although we do have a few remote ranges that support sheep populations for the backpack hunter. Our horseback hunts start from a base-camp where you will fly in with either a bush plane or floatplane. Most of the time sheep hunting is spent in spike camps, so that the daily travel with horses starts in sheep country, and you are hunting right from the tent.
Glassing is the most important part of the sheep hunts. Be prepared to spend long days glassing for Stone sheep. Quality binoculars and spotting scope are essential. We prefer to pre-scout the sheep hunting areas, but sheep can easily be ‘spooked’. They can run a day’s ride away in about one hour. They like to change their feeding habits and ranges daily, so intense glassing is essential to find them before they see you.
Your experienced guide will take you into the pre-scouted sheep area and try and use horses where he can. This hunt can be very physically demanding, and you should be prepared to climb a few mountains to get the job done. Not only are the sheep hunts the most rewarding experiences of any hunts, but also the exceptional views from mountaintops exceed every expectation! |
